Turkeys are reared in specially designed purpose built housing using both fan and natural ventilation systems. Bedding materials consist of wood shavings. Birds are brooded for six weeks before being transferred to fattening farms.
Organic turkeys are typically slower growing and are fed on a specially formulated organic diet. Strict growing and welfare standards are set down and implemented by the Organic Trust Ltd.
Free-range turkeys are reared in ventilated housing designed in a manner that allows access to the exterior through pop holes on the side of the house. Birds must be free to roam outside the shed for at least half their life cycle and stocking density within the shed must not exceed 25Kgs per square metre.
All livestock are farmed in line with Farm Animal Welfare Council's (FAWC) "5 Freedoms":
Welfare and husbandry standards are customer specific on many of our farms. Grove operates company owned and independent grower livestock sites, all of which are regularly supervised by both Company and DAFF to ensure compliance to standards.
Grove operates the highest levels of bio security throughout its agricultural operations to ensure the welfare of the flocks and to minimise the risk of disease challenge to the livestock.
Grove operates a combination of Company owned and third party breeding farms to service its day old poultry requirements.
Grove uses company owned and third party fully licensed hatcheries to supply its requirements of commercial livestock.
Grove controls the feed specification, feed formulations and sourcing of all feed inputs. Third part millers compound the feed supply. Regular testing takes place to ensure specification compliance and optimum flock performance. The feed is made of Wheat and Soya and fortified with minerals and supplements.
Grove engages third party Nutritional and Veterinary experts to advise on all aspects of livestock performance and particularly when flocks may experience challenges.
